First time trimming a rose plant

Trimming a rose for the first time was pretty intimidating. What if I made a mistake? I felt like I wasn't blueblood enough to be trimming a rose, even touching a rose plan really. Roses are the domain of people with money or people who want to appear to have money.

Anyway, I trimmed the rose plant. Was afraid it wouldn't grow back but it did. Probably didn't trim it enough really. Now I'm stuck with the question of how to trim it properly next time. I really should make more of an effort but I find roses a bit uninspiring. Sure they look beautiful but they don't really have too much utility beyond that. Am I that much of a utilitarian? Maybe I had bad experience with a rose bush when I was younger which I don't remember.
